On April 21 local time, the German Center for Automotive Management (CAM), an automotive market research institute, released the2026 Automotive Innovation Report. Chinese manufacturer BYD claimed the top spot in the global automotive industry innovation rankings for the first time with 157 points, surpassing last year’s winner Volkswagen, which scored 143 points.
Mercedes-Benz ranked third with 134 points. Xpeng Motors (128 points), BMW and Geely Group followed closely, placing fourth to sixth respectively. Renault, Toyota, General Motors and Hyundai also featured in the top ten.
This marks the first time a Chinese automaker has taken the championship since the launch of the "Automotive Innovation Research" project in 2005.
